Research Spotlight – Current Trends

Technology-driven mental health solutions

Technology-driven mental health platforms and apps are not difficult to find. There are several online telehealth counseling platforms, apps to help with mindfulness grounding techniques and still other apps that help one track anxiety, depression, impulsive, etc. behaviors. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) examined the role of technology in advancing mental health treatment. It highlights how mobile devices like smartphones and tablets enable new ways to access help, monitor progress, and enhance understanding of mental well-being. Simple technologies, such as the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, provide immediate support, while sophisticated apps use device sensors to track behavior patterns. Current trends include integrating apps with human interaction, developing evidence-based digital interventions, and using AI for personalized care. NIMH supports research grants focusing on feasibility, efficacy, and accessibility of technologies for disorders like depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. It emphasizes evaluating apps by checking their evidence base, usability, and privacy policies. Also, NIMH does not endorse any of the mental health apps.

Loneliness and social connection

Technology’s Dual Role

Loneliness remains a critical issue in 2025, with heightened awareness driving global and local action. Young people and vulnerable groups are most affected, with technology playing a complex role as both a contributor and potential solution.

Research remains mixed on social media’s impact on loneliness. Heavy use, especially if one is trying to escape their own reality, is associated with increased loneliness, particularly among youth. However, when used to maintain relationships or supplement in-person contact, it can reduce loneliness.

At Pebble Ripple, we strive to strengthen human connection through technology. In the future, Pebble Ripple will offer online courses to help a person navigate their loneliness and find ways to connect with others online, as well as in person in our own community.

Community Corner

In this section, we want to promote engagement. We’ll post a question for you to respond to, we’ll pick as many of the entries as will fit and put here. If your encounter is not selected, we encourage you to keep sharing.

Question: What’s your favorite connection tool; group chats, online meetings, etc.?

I like several connections tools; however, I’ll address two here, group chats and online meetings. I love seeing what people think and how others respond with their thoughts on the topic. Group chat is a great way to start engaging with others when we’re not super comfortable sharing our thoughts and feelings with strangers. Online meetings are fun too! I love being in the moment and connecting with others😊 – Dr. Suzie Dukic
